The truth is that once in a while you’ll find yourself in a connection destination—one of those places you chose to visit just to break up a 24-hour bus ride. You may not have taken the time to research this place beforehand, maybe you thought you’d just get some rest, drink lots of coffee, and catching up on some reading and writing emails.
If you’re anything like me, this sounds great in theory. Lying on the beach for hours sounds like a dream. However, this little thing called boredom starts to creep in eventually, and suddenly the day can’t end soon enough. This is a shame—you are on the road, you should be anything but bored. The problem is that you didn’t plan on spending any substantial money on activities here, you’ve only got a day or two, and you really don’t know what’s around on such short notice. If you are talking about thrill seeking and adventure, you’re probably thinking about New Zealand. It’s one of those lovable and enchanting places that gets just the right amount of hype. Not to mention the food–you can’t forget the joyous thing that is Southeast Asian cuisine. Any type of traveler can find a place in the region: luxury or budget travellers, outdoor junkies and spirituality seekers.
I planned my time in Southeast Asia along the way, forgoing sidetrips to Laos, Vietnam, and Malaysia when I felt a longing to spend more time in Thailand and Cambodia. The result was a budget-friendly itinerary that covered all my bases: beaches, temples, mountains, food, history, and the chance to gain a sense of the true lifestyles in these countries. I spent more time exploring, learning, and feeling free than on buses, planes, and trains.

Growing up, I couldn’t wait to get away from home. Get away from my house, my town, my province, my country. I imagined what it would be like to grow up somewhere exotic, exciting, somewhere with greater opportunities.
Now, I find that the longer I am away the more I think about going back. Travel teaches you that everywhere is home for someone. The home I have is a unique and beautiful place with lots of history behind it. It’s a place that deserves recognition, and I haven’t given it enough.
